Retinitis Pigmentosa is a genetic disorder affecting an estimated 100,000 people in the U.S. That’s roughly one in every 3,100 people. People with Retinitis Pigmentosa experience a gradual reduction in vision leading to partial to total blindness. Most people are diagnosed in their late teens or early twenties and are legally blind by the time they are 40. Some forms of the condition cause earlier blindness than others. The condition has no cure and no effective treatment. The Foundation Fighting Blindness funds research to change that. They are working towards the goal of preserving and restoring sight to hundreds of thousands of people who would otherwise spend half their lives in the dark.
